Volunteer for Trout in the Classroom!

Amber Taylor - MNTU Education Program Supervisor on August 12, 20242026-04-29T00:54:02+00:00
By Amber Taylor - MNTU Education Program Supervisor on August 12, 2024

Volunteerism is the voice of the people put into action. These actions shape and mold the present into a future of which we can all be proud.

MNTU’s mission is to protect, restore, and sustain Minnesota’s coldwater fisheries and their watersheds. Protection comes in the form of advocacy and restoration through habitat work. Sustaining these first two components requires educating people of all ages about the special aquatic resources found throughout our beautiful state. The work MNTU does to protect and restore our creeks, streams, and rivers means little without education. Current and future generations learning about and connecting with their local watersheds in ways that build lasting, life-long stewards of the natural world is essential to sustaining them.

Volunteers play an integral role in the continued success and growth of our education program that upholds the mission of sustaining coldwater resources. From assisting with TIC activities and fishing skills programs to mentoring a pair of new fly anglers or delivering a cooler of trout eggs, volunteers help to extend our small team’s educational impact. As the map of TIC schools and fishing program locations expands throughout the state, so does the need to build a strong network of support that includes members from all five MNTU chapters.

Are you interested in working with TIC teachers in the classroom, assisting our team with education programs, helping with youth Trout Clubs, lending a hand at fishing events, or learning about other education related opportunities? If so, please fill out this brief form to let us know how you’d like to get involved!

Current and potential Trout in the Classroom volunteers are invited to attend a teacher training being held on Saturday, September 21, 2024 from 9AM-3PM at the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Bloomington. New and returning teachers from around the state will be in attendance to learn about fish and tank care, integrating TIC topics into their classrooms, and conducting aquatic insect studies with students. Let us know on the form linked above if you’d like to attend this training.

For more information about MNTU’s education programs visit the Outreach and Education page. Please note that background checks are required for volunteering with youth education. The form and instructions are linked here. It takes only a few minutes to complete! Email Amber, mntu.education@gmail.com, with any questions.
