Take Action to Protect Trout and Aquatic Ecosystems Across the State

Kristen Poppleton2026-02-12T15:44:45+00:00

May 2025

FEDERAL ACTION TO PROTECT THE BOUNDARY WATERS
The House Natural Resources Committee recently passed its reconciliation bill that dismantles Boundary Waters protections from sulfide-ore copper mining. These efforts open the door to toxic copper mining within the watershed of the Boundary Waters, a world-class recreational fishery and home to native lake trout that are sensitive to small changes in the ecosystem.

Contact your Senators today and tell them:

Hi, I am calling for Senator_______

My name is_____________, and I live in____________(state).

The House Natural Resources Committee recently passed its reconciliation bill that dismantles Boundary Waters protections from sulfide-ore copper mining. As your constituent and an angler, I ask that you oppose any budget reconciliation efforts that would open the door to toxic copper mining within the watershed of the Boundary Waters – America’s most visited Wilderness. This habitat supports world-class recreational fisheries that are sensitive to small changes in the ecosystem. Please ensure that hard-won protections are not rolled back by opposing any budget reconciliation efforts that would harm the Boundary Waters.

Thank you.

While at this time (5/12/25) contacting Senators is the most urgent, it is never a bad idea to let your Representative know of your concern.

Hi, I am calling for Representative ____________________

My name is_____________, and I live in____________(city and state).

The House Natural Resources Committee recently passed its reconciliation bill that dismantles Boundary Waters protections from sulfide-ore copper mining. As your constituent and an angler, I am concerned about any efforts that would open the door to toxic copper mining within the watershed of the Boundary Waters – America’s most visited Wilderness. This habitat supports world-class recreational fisheries that are sensitive to small changes in the ecosystem. Please ensure that hard-won protections are not rolled back by opposing any efforts that would harm the Boundary Waters.

Thank you.

STATE ACTION TO REIN IN DATA CENTER’S USE OF COLD WATER
There are several bills before the Minnesota legislature this year that propose to exempt all data centers from critical environmental laws and extend our existing generous sales tax exemptions to the largest data centers. These actions could have major potential impacts on coldwater trout habitats from the pumping of groundwater for data center cooling purposes. Groundwater springs are the lifeblood of trout streams and high-volume groundwater withdrawals can lower water tables, reduce stream flows, and elevate water temperatures, which are all detrimental to trout populations that require cold, oxygen-rich waters to thrive.

Here’s who you call:

Gov. Tim Walz: 651-201-3400

Contact the Governor, your state senator and representative and tell them:

Hi, I am calling for [Governor/Senator/Representative]

My name is_____________, and I live in____________(town or county).

I’m calling to ask you to express my concern over several bills before the Minnesota legislature this year that propose to exempt all data centers from critical environmental laws and extend our existing generous sales tax exemptions to the largest data centers. As an angler, I have significant concern over the potential impact on coldwater trout habitats from the pumping of groundwater for data center cooling purposes. Groundwater springs are the lifeblood of trout streams and high-volume groundwater withdrawals can lower water tables, reduce stream flows, and elevate water temperatures, which are all detrimental to trout populations that require cold, oxygen-rich waters to thrive. Please prioritize our aquatic ecosystems and the health, prosperity, and sustainability of our communities

Thank you.
